Melasma

Melasma or mask of pregnancy

Do you have brown discolourations, pigmentation spots on your face, décolletage, arms or legs that become darker in spring or summer in particular? You may suffer from melasma, a form of hyperpigmentation.

What is melasma?

Melasma is a pigmentation problem of the skin that is caused by the influence of UV light, for instance from the sun or a tanning bed. Hormones can also cause the pigmentation spots. This is also sometimes referred to as the ‘mask of pregnancy’. Melasma occurs mainly in women and causes brown or grey discolourations. These spots are usually found on the face, on the cheeks and chin.
Occasionally we also see women with discolourations on the arms, legs, and décolletage. Women with dark skin have a higher risk of melasma because they have more active pigment cells.

Melasma treatment

If melasma is caused by hormones (following a pregnancy, for example), the spots may fade over time by themselves. However, this can take several years. The most important melasma treatment starts at home. By using a good sunscreen, even in the winter, you prevent worsening of the pigmentation spots. At the clinic, we offer various types of melasma treatments.

  • Laser therapy
  • Peelings
  • ZO Medical products for normalization of the active pigment cells
  • Camouflage therapy with the products from Jane Iredale

Explanation melasma treatments

Treatment with the medical laser will cause the pigmentation spots to become lighter in colour.
The laser emits pulses of light with a certain wavelength. This attacks the excess pigment, whereas the skin is affected minimally. The laser therapist will usually do a test treatment since everyone’s skin responds differently to laser therapy when they have melasma.

The peeling is very suitable for superficial pigmentation spots. The peeling is performed by our skin therapist. You’ll first meet her for an intake consultation, where she will closely study your face and explain the treatment.
The peeling will stimulate renewal of the epidermis. The old skin will peel and flake off, greatly reducing the spots. The costs of the medical peeling are reimbursed by some supplementary insurance policies. Check your insurance policy to see if this applies to you.

ZO 3-Step Stimulation Peel
The skin therapist will analyse the general condition of your skin and choose an appropriate treatment. For melasma, the ZO 3-Step peeling offers amazing results.

Spots on your face that bother you can be easily camouflaged with make-up. A natural, mineral-based make-up provides a soft feel, cares for your skin and lets it breathe.
The make-up products also contain a sunscreen, which is essential when you have the mask of pregnancy or melasma. Please feel free to stop by our clinic. Our skin therapist will be happy to show you the products and help you choose the right colour. She can also tell you more about the correct way to apply the make-up.
